The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro climbing route that approaches the mountain from the northern side near the Kenya border. Known for its quieter trails, remote wilderness atmosphere, and gradual ascent profile, Rongai is an excellent option for trekkers seeking a more peaceful and less crowded experience.

This route offers beautiful alpine scenery, excellent wildlife viewing opportunities during the lower sections, and a unique summit approach to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Day 01 :

Arrival in Tanzania

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Meet and greet by Exciting African Tours and transfer to your hotel in Moshi.

• Overnight in Moshi

• Climb briefing and equipment check

Day 02 :

Rongai Gate → Simba Camp (2,625m)

Drive to the northern side of Kilimanjaro and begin trekking through forest and moorland landscapes.

• Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

• Overnight at Simba Camp

Day 03 :

Simba Camp → Second Cave Camp (3,450m)

Gradual ascent with spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the Kenyan plains.

• Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

• Overnight at Second Cave Camp

Day 04 :

Second Cave Camp → Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)

Continue through quiet alpine scenery toward the rugged eastern side of the mountain.

• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

• Overnight at Kikelewa Camp

Day 05 :

Kikelewa Camp → Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)

Trek beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak.

• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

• Overnight at Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Day 06 :

Mawenzi Tarn Camp → Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks while preparing for summit night.

• Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

• Overnight at Kibo Hut

Day 07 :

Summit Day → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut

Midnight summit attempt to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa.

After the summit celebration, descend to Horombo Hut.

• Hiking Time: 10–14 hours

• Overnight at Horombo Hut

Day 08 :

Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Moshi

Final descent through rainforest to Marangu Gate.

Receive summit certificates before transfer back to Moshi.
